Spectrum Growth

As we begin to shift our growth framework away from linear growth into spectrum growth there are a few key things that have helped me to understand the shift.

1. Spectrum Growth has to be rooted. In order for any organism to grow, it must take root in something significant. Typically, this root has been talked about in terms of “DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms.)” The conversation about DNA is crucial to what type of spectrum growth we will encounter. What information is located at your DNA level? For Missiongathering, our DNA exists in the life, death and resurrection of Christ for ALL. That grace was made available for ALL. This is where we can organically begin to grow our color spectrum and allow it to interact with other spectrums to form and shape our spiritual life.

2. Spectrum Growth vs. Spiritual Consumerism. There is a distinct difference between spectrum interaction and spiritual consumerism. Spiritual consumerism focuses on getting our needed “fix” from multiple places and expressions. Again, this is a linear type of consumption. Consumerism is only rooted in the need to “fit into” the already existing linear thought. Spectrum growth roots itself and allows multiple expressions to interact with our organic growth. It is not simply consuming, but instead digesting and integrating different sources of expression.

My spectrum’s colors and balance will look much different than yours, but will be rooted in the same way you are. Where do you root? What does your spectrum look like? How does it grow? How is it nourished? How does it interact with other’s spectrums?

Secret Identity or Public Figure?

Clark Kent.  Lt. Diana Prince.  Bruce Wayne.  These were their names to their friends and colleagues, but they were known to the rest of their community as Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman.  While they have their descriptive names, the heroes of the Fantastic Four have no real way of hiding who they are.  Apart from their snazzy heat resistant, disappearing, stretchy, and strong uniforms, they look the same when they’re saving the world as they do when they walk down the street.  I can certainly understand the dilemma between both ideas.  On the one hand, I’m sure it would get incredibly annoying having people coming up to you all the time asking for your help.  On the other hand, people seeing you all the time would reinforce the reality of the presence of safety in the community.  With a secret identity there are things that can be hidden and separated.  As a public figure, it’s all out there - full responsibility all the time.

So what about you?  Do you have a secret identity when it comes to your faith, or are you a public figure?  Living missionally, in my opinion, means being a public figure with your faith.  As I said on Sunday, I don’t believe that it means beating someone over the head with your theology, Bible, or faith.  What if we simply didn’t hide the reality of our faith in our daily lives?  What if we lived out the doubts, the struggles, the ups, the downs, the joys, the pains, and the authenticity of our journey of faith in our daily lives?   I think sometimes we get paralyzed by the fear of not having all the answers, or by the fear of not doing something with a big enough impact, or by the fear of lacking some greater calling.  Sure…we all might end up with some opportunity to have a monumental impact on the world.  The reality, though, is that we can surely have an impact on the world around us on a daily basis.  Mother Teresa was once asked how she had accomplished so many amazing things in her life.  She responded by saying, “None of us can do anything great on our own, but we can all do a small thing with great love.”

How can we choose to be a public figure?  What are the small things we can do with great love to impact the community around us?  How do we engage in missional relationships, missional conversations, missional actions on a daily basis?  What will you do this week?

Can communities of faith (the Church) really save the world?!

I finally found Jesus!!

Wow! What a question! But I will try to answer that question, with another question. When did we (the body of Christ) stop believing we could redeem God’s world back to him?!

As a church we have begun asking ourselves, what does it mean to really be a revolutionary community of faith… some of the answers have actually become more questions. But we can’t stop asking nor trying to be agents of change.

We just had to become visionary in our new skin and wine, as Jesus talked about…

(Matt. 9:16-17). NIV

16“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

God is doing a new thing!! The church just has to catch up! So discover your God-given abilities of grace and love! Journey with us, as we, a community of faith decide to understand what it means to “preserve” the life changing power of God’s grace, that is for ALL of God’s creation…

Concerning the photo! I’ve been on a lifelong journey to find the real Jesus… it so happens he vacations down in Orlando, Florida! And he actually found ME!!!

The Distance…

One of the things that truly stood out to me throughout this series (so far) has been the quotation:

“The distance between you and I disappears we we love eachother.”

I think there is so much truth in living that out.  For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been trying to live that out by looking at where there are opportunities to truly “love” someone.

What ways are you living this out this week?  What opportunities have you had?
